Storytelling

Definition

Story craft as a communication skill rather than an art: choosing the audience first, structuring the story around a conflict, and making the audience see rather than be told. Drawn from a spoken-storytelling course, James Scott Bell’s 《这样写出好故事》, and reverse-engineering a Higashino Keigo mystery.

Core Ideas

Start with the audience, not the story

The single reordering that changes everything: define the audience before choosing the story.

  • Audience — build the persona.
  • Desired outcome — what do you want them to feel or think?
  • Current mindset — where are they starting from?
  • Obstacles — which mindsets will resist this?

Structure

BeatWhat it carries
Contextwhat, who, why
Conflictbefore and after; the stake; the moment something happens
Outcomethe result
Takeawaywhy it mattered

Do not invent a personal story. The credibility of a personal story is the whole point of telling it.

Make them feel — show, don’t tell

  • Don’t narrate a story; give them what they see, hear, and taste.
  • Don’t say the character was frustrated — describe them cutting someone off in conversation.
  • Aim to help the audience see what they then cannot unsee.

Sequence is a choice

Linear · flashback · circular · begin-with-the-end · parallel · change-of-perspective · compare-contrast-imagine-if.

Structuring a mystery (麒麟之翼)

Reverse-engineered as a repeatable sequence, and generalizable well beyond mystery:

  1. Unfold the story gradually.
  2. Establish background and situation first.
  3. Lead the reader toward a most-plausible false truth.
  4. Plant the real truth’s foreshadowing inside that false version.
  5. Find the pivot — in this book, the victim’s son looking up at the Kirin statue, plus the nurse’s line, “receiving the message the dead send is the duty of the living.” The protagonist and the reader break through at the same moment.
  6. Add a smaller secondary twist to surface the true culprit.
  7. Close on the character’s transformation, not the plot’s resolution.

The craft note worth keeping: the pivot works because it is delivered as an emotional observation, not a clue.

Getting the writing done (James Scott Bell)

The book’s value is mostly discipline, not technique:

  • Be willing to try.
  • Write “freely and willfully” — just write.
  • Write first, write well second.
  • Set a quota.
  • Don’t quit.

The reader’s own aim: fiction as popular inspirational reading — using story to illuminate life and the present situation.

A worked exercise

The source contains a complete story sketch built from the framework — a commuter who brakes for what he assumes is a rabbit, then keeps seeing the white corpse in his rear-view mirror; a protagonist with career and relationship goals; an obstacle that is internal (he thinks he is ill); and a resolution tied to the setting’s premise (a fox spirit, laid to rest once he finds and buries the body).

Note what the sketch demonstrates: goal, obstacle, and resolution each sit in a different layer — external plot, internal belief, and world premise.
